Classic Black and Whites

I LOVE classic black and whites. I also love to create artistic prints with high contrast and blown out exposure especially with black and whites and sepia tones. The sepia tone prints look stunning on metallic paper on mat board. I ALWAYS order black and whites on true digital black and white matte paper on mat board. Amazing paper! Why the Cost?

So why the additional cost in photography? This is an excellent article:

Even though you pay $1.99 for a print at your local drugstore and paying for film is pretty much a thing of the past (although you still pay for memory) you may be wondering why you may pay upwards of $40, 50, 70, 90 for a custom photography print. Some photographers hear this statement every once in awhile:

“How in the world can you charge $60 for an 8×10 if it costs me less than $2 to print at the local drug store?”

The answer is multifaceted and has a lot to do with the time, aforementioned equipment costs, artistic vision and reputation of the photographer, expertise and the usual costs of running a legitimate business.

I’ll break down my costs to this point:

3 cameras, batteries (5), flash & accessories, & cards (6) approximately $5,500
lenses (4) $3,500
laptop approximately $2,000
Adobe Creative Suite Design Premium & Adobe LightRoom approximately $1,300
websites including hosting and proofing sites approximately $700
marketing annually $500
other associated business costs $850

I like to keep my costs at a minimum because I normally end up giving a lot of discounts and print gifts in the end I do spend anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes processing each photo and I take about 300-400 photos per session delivering anywhere from 50 to 200 digital proofs. So the time involved including the session, the correspondence, the download and upload times and the final delivery of prints is enormous. After searching and searching and researching and researching, I found 2 great labs that I use and both have excellent reputations for great customer service and products. I’ve been extremely happy with their prints. If you’re a professional photographer email me for their names.

Above all I keep my costs low because I have never really done this for the money, but the love of art and the emotional and social aspects of it. I would eventually love to do this full time, but am working towards the smaller goals first.
